At UKJ scientists from more than 50 nations all over the world do research for a advance in medicine. They work both in the field of fundamental biomedical research and in translational and patient-related clinical research.

NeuroCure Berlin is a Cluster of Excellence in the neurosciences funded since 2007 by the German federal and state governments (Excellence Initiative). The focus of the Cluster is on investigating neurological and psychiatric disorders. The aim of this interdisciplinary research network is to better understand disease mechanisms and to develop new therapies.

Open position: Research fellow (m/f/d) in the field of Experimental Biophysics with expected 2/3 part-time employment - E 13 TV-L HU (third-party funding limited until 31.12.2028)
to work with the research groups of Prof. Peter Hegemann (HU) and Prof. Klaus Benndorf (UKJ) scientific services in research in the project „Improvement of light-activated ion channels (Channelrhodopsins) for neuronal application by using electrical single channel recording, MD simulation, and molecular engineering\"

Background: Channelrhodopsins are light-gated ion channels from microalgae. They have revolutionized in the past 20 years the neurosciences because they allow if implanted into selected neurons to specifically activate these neurons with light and to understand their function within the large brain context. Recently in a close collaboration with Klaus Benndorf (Jena), it was possible to electrically monitor activity and gating of individual channelrhodopsin molecules and to „see“ and analyze the diversity of multiple open states

- opportunity for own scientific Qualification - completed scientific university degree and if applicable PhD in the life sciences with in-depth -
- knowledge of molecular biology and experience in electrophysiology
- basic knowledge and practical experience in programming is an advantage
- mastery of standard computer programs for data analysis
- ability and interest to work in international research teams
- very good command of written and spoken English (at least B2) The two involved research groups and and the center of excellence NeuroCure offer excellent interdisciplinary and international environment for PhD nstudents.
The Graduate Program Medical Neurosciences (MedNeuro) focusses on translational science, integrates basic laboratory research and clinical neurosciences, preparing students for careers at the intersection of bench and bedside in academic neurosciences and the biomedical industry.
