About the roleThe AI Research Department of Agile Robots are looking for applied AI / ML research engineers who enjoy turning ambitious research ideas into working intelligent systems . In this role, you operate at the intersection of modern machine learning and real-world, embodied applications. You translate promising concepts into fast, testable prototypes that inform where deeper investment makes sense.You don’t need prior robotics experience. What matters is strong ML intuition, clean Python, and the ability to move fluidly between papers, data, and code. It is a single applied-research intake funnel for candidates whose strengths lie in rapid ML experimentation, multimodal prototyping, and research-to-code translation.
Final team, scope, and title will be determined during the interview process, based on where your profile creates the most impact.Your Responsibilities
• Research-to-prototype translation: Explore and prototype recent approaches in applied ML — such as multimodal learning, video-based models, 3D perception, simulation-driven learning, or imitation / reinforcement learning and turn them into working proof-of-concepts.
• Applied Modelling: Implement and adapt ML approaches across perception, representation learning, prediction, or action-related tasks with a focus on practical learning value
• Multimodal Experiments: Work with data such as images, video, 3D representations, trajectories, actions, or simulation sequences to validate embodied and interactive AI concepts
• Prototype Pipelines: Build lightweight training and evaluation pipelines to compare approaches, analyze failure modes, and improve robustness
• Team Collaboration: Partner with researchers and engineers to test feasibility in realistic settings and align prototypes with real constraints
Essential Skills
• Applied ML: Solid experience in applied machine learning such as computer vision, video or sequence modelling, multimodal learning, simulation-based ML, or reinforcement or imitation learning
• Education Level: Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience with strong technical depth
• Python Engineering: Strong Python skills with hands-on experience implementing models, experiments, and training loops from scratch
• Prototype Speed: Proven ability to move quickly from an idea, paper, or hypothesis to a working ML prototype
• Engineering Maturity: Strong debugging discipline and comfort working with imperfect, real-world data
• Research Rigor: Ability to design reproducible experiments, define baselines, and communicate results clearly in writing
Beneficial Skills
• Frontier AI: Experience exploring approaches such as vision-language models, vision-language-action concepts, or embodied AI ideas at prototype or research level
• Research Tooling: Familiarity with PyTorch-based research workflows and experiment management practices
• Domain Exposure: Exposure to robotics-adjacent domains such as autonomous systems, industrial ML, simulation, or physical systems
• Research Practice: Research experience paired with strong practical software implementation skills
• From Scratch: Comfort implementing models and training pipelines from first principles rather than relying only on prebuilt templates
