The Department of Internal Medicine 3 – Rheumatology & Immunology, Uniklinikum Erlangen and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), Germany invites applications for a PhD position (m/f/d).

This position will be located in the study group of Musculoskeletal Function and Mechanobiology. Research in this study group focuses on the role of musculoskeletal function in patients and healthy individuals. We have a special interest in understanding the role of physical function for the detection of disease activity in patients with rheumatic diseases. The planned research is embedded in the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1483 EmpkinS. The doctoral candidate (m/f/d) will investigate methods for the detection of patterns in hand function related to disease activity in inflammatory arthritis patients from motion capture data and relate these new biomechanical markers with clinical data.

Tasks

- Biomechanical analysis of hand movements

- Statistical analysis of relevant parameters

- Reporting and documentation of results

- Data collection of hand function (motion capture, EMG, clinical data, conventional hand function tests)

Know-How

- Above-average Master’s degree or comparable university qualification in medical engineering, sport/movement science, sports technology, biotechnology, computer science or similar fields
- Experience with motion capture methods (marker-based motion capture and electromyography techniques)
- Strong knowledge in at least two of the following areas: biomechanics /mechanics, movement science, statistics, machine learning, programming skills
- Good understanding of musculoskeletal function and human movement

Additionally beneficial are

- Strong knowledge of human movement and physiology

- Solid understanding of musculoskeletal function and biostatistics

- Interest in clinical sciences

- Good English language skills
- German language skills sufficient for communication with patients
