The Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Leipzig University Hospital is one of the largest institutions for Pediatric Surgery and basic science in Pediatric Surgery in Germany.

Our research group focuses on understanding the developmental mechanisms underlying congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), one of the most severe neonatal malformations. Despite advances in surgical care, many affected infants continue to face high mortality due to insufficient lung and pulmonary vascular development. To address this unmet clinical need, we investigate mechanisms that drive impaired lung growth in CDH. Recent analyses of our group have revealed strong activation of pro-inflammatory signalling cascades, including NF-κB, as well as an increased presence of macrophages in hypoplastic lungs – findings that highlight key contributors to the altered inflammatory processes.

Using human tissue samples, human stem cells, different animal models, and ex vivo lung systems, our group aims to dissect disease-specific pathways at a mechanistic level that could lead to novel therapeutic development.

We are seeking an exceptional, highly motivated doctoral student (PhD) to join our dynamic team as soon as possible. This person should be as eager as we are to uncover novel meaningful insights into CDH pathobiology.

- Conducting molecular biological studies, Topic: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH)
- Performing advanced experimental work with animal models and primary cell culture
- Structuring, planning, coordinating and executing experiments
- Developing innovative methods and research approaches in the laboratory
- Participating in scientific events and contributing with you own presentations

## Ihr Profil

 **Your profile:**

- Completed university degree (Master/Diploma) in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology/medicine, human medicine or related discipline
- Strong expertise in cell and molecular biology and related methods
- Experience in animal experimentation and cell culture work is desirable
- Knowledge of statistical analysis (e.g. with R-Studio and/or GraphPad or other software)
- Independent and goal-orientated work style, fast learning, strong organisation skills, team spirit and high motivation
