# PhD Position – Development of Advanced Iron Anodes for Long-Duration Energy Storage

At the Institute of Energy Technologies – Fundamentals of Electrochemistry (IET-1), we conduct research on highly topical issues relating to the energy transition and structural change. For example, we are working on the battery of the future and researching novel battery concepts. Another exciting project we are working on is how to turn the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO₂) from a climate killer into a raw material of the future. The aim of our research and development work is to develop cost-effective batteries, fuel cells and electrolysers with improved energy and power density, longer service life and maximum safety! ## Your Job

The transition to a climate-neutral energy system requires safe, sustainable, and cost-effective technologies for long-duration electricity storage. Rechargeable iron–air batteries are attracting increasing attention as a promising solution due to the abundance, low cost, and environmental compatibility of iron. Despite their significant potential, further scientific advances are needed to overcome key challenges associated with the iron anode, including parasitic hydrogen evolution, limited active material utilization, and long-term cycling stability. Addressing these challenges is essential for enabling the practical deployment of rechargeable iron–air batteries in future large-scale energy storage applications.

As a PhD researcher, you will investigate the relationships between electrode composition, microstructure, manufacturing processes, and electrochemical performance to develop next-generation iron anodes for rechargeable iron–air batteries. The project combines electrochemistry, materials science, and engineering, providing an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of one of the most promising technologies for long-duration electricity storage.

Your tasks will include:

- Developing reproducible experimental and testing protocols
- Investigating functional additives to improve anode performance and stability
- Developing suitable current-collector concepts for alkaline battery operation
- Designing and fabricating porous iron electrodes
- Performing electrochemical evaluation in relevant cell configurations
- Applying advanced characterization methods to relate material properties to electrochemical behavior

## Your Profile

- A completed Master's degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, electrochemistry, physics, or a related discipline
- A strong interest in electrochemical energy storage, battery materials, and experimental research
- Hands-on laboratory experience and a careful, structured, and safety-conscious approach to experimental work
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and international team
- Very good command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required (at least B2 level according to the [CEFR](https://go.fzj.de/languagerequirements)), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level. Knowledge of the German language is not mandatory but certainly appreciated
- Experience in electrochemistry, battery testing, powder processing, electrode fabrication, corrosion, or materials characterization is advantageous
